Maria Martinez Serrano

Maria Martinez Serrano was born in 1892. Her mother died giving birth to her. Her aunt Semira cared for her and the young siblings during the interval between the two marriages. After the marriage to Maria Teresa, Maria Martinez was a baby of about three years of age. She and her siblings lived in a separate part of the house. There was domestic help to look after the young ones. The older sisters who were already grown were in charge of the little ones with the assistance of the maids although Maria Teresa as new stepmother is known to have had a voice on some occasions. It is reported that as an adult, Maria Martinez had good memories of her stepmother Maria Teresa. Maria Martinez Serrano had three children and from these children there are many descendants (children, grandchildren, etc., etc.). Her husband’s name was Eustorgio Calderon, so the last name of her children was Calderon.

Maria Martinez Serrano (L) and her older sister Julia Martinez Serrano (R). These sisters were very close probably because after the death of their father, Maria had taken her in, so she lived in Maria’s household with her son for a few years.

On a trip in 2013, we asked descendants of Maria to introduce themselves on a video so that their North American relatives could get a glimpse of them and of their lives. The first 13-1/2 minutes introduce the descendants of Maria:

The descendants of Maria in the above video were descended through her son Leonidas. When Leonidas married his wife Laura (who is also in the 2013 video), an interesting photo was taken of the guests in attendance at the wedding. Click the small image below to see the full size version of this photo and below the photo itself there is a slideshow identifying the guests who were at the wedding.
